Seam was formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1990 with Sooyoung Park (guitar, vocals), Lexi Mitchell (bass), and, from Superchunk, Mac McCaughan (drums). Headsparks, the band’s debut album, showcased Seam’s exceptional brand of contemplative, wistful pop. Drummer John McEntire (Repulse Kava, Bastro) joined shortly before the band’s first European tour in May 1992.
Seam relocated to Chicago that summer and enlisted theBand Photo services of Ken “Bundy” Brown (Bastro, Repulse Kava) as second guitarist. The band signed with Touch & Go Records and began recording with Brad Wood, who was then emerging as one of America’s hottest record producers via his work with rising stars Liz Phair and Veruca Salt. The Kernel EP and The Problem With Me album, both recorded with Wood at his Idful Music studios, thrust Seam into the front ranks of what’s come to be known as “alternative rock.” Guitarist Craig White and drummer Bob Rising, who played on The Problem With Me, were succeeded by Reg Shrader and Chris Manfrin in summer 1993. Tours of the US, Canada and Europe helped to solidify and expand Seam’s fan base, as did the MTV debut of the video “Bunch.”
In 1994, Mitchell left Seam and the band took a break from touring and recording. Park traveled to Seoul, Korea, where he met William Shin, who became Seam’s new bassist upon his return to the US. Seam’s latest album, Are You Driving Me Crazy?, recorded with Wood at Idful Music in winter 1995, was released the following summer. In spring 1995 Park, Shin, and their friend Ben Kim organized the successful Ear of the Dragon compilation and tour of Asian American rock bands, which featured Seam, aMiniature, Venus Cures All, Cub, Versus, J Church, and others.
1996 will find Seam recording, touring, and playing to fans both old and new. Seam’s goals include sending out their music to wider audiences at home and overseas, and recording the new tunes that they have been lovingly laboring over since their last album.
